Good morning!
Risk assets are volatile as we approach the end of the summer holidays, with the market awaiting direction from the Fed, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the status of the US-China trade deal. Ethereum hit a new all-time high last week, staging an impressive rally over the last few weeks. Powell’s speech at Jackson Hole was the main driver for risk assets last week, as the probability of a rate cut during the September meeting has risen. There was a clear change of narrative, focusing on labour conditions at the expense of inflation, which appears to be less of a concern.
From a data perspective, tomorrow’s U.S. GDP is projected to expand by 3% quarter-on-quarter, rebounding from the previous 0.5% contraction. On Friday, the PCE index is expected to ease slightly (-0.1% versus the prior reading), while personal spending and income are both forecast to rise at the same pace as before, up 0.3% month-on-month. Next week, China’s Manufacturing PMI is anticipated to print at 50, while Eurozone inflation is expected to edge up by 0.1 percentage points to 2.1% year-on-year.
